So, you're thinking about buying the MGS5. Today, we're going to have a look
MGS5. Today, we're going to have a look around the outside, the inside, and take it on a range test from one side of the country to the other side of the country. And I'm going to cover some of
country. And I'm going to cover some of the niggly bits that might get on your nerves if you do go and buy it. Let's
get started. Get charged up for the 2025 Nevo Electric Vehicle Show in partnership with Bank of Ireland and powered by SSE Electricity. Explore over

nevo.ie today. I think it's a handsome looking car. Comes in six different
looking car. Comes in six different colors, two trims, and two battery sizes. And prices in Ireland starting at
sizes. And prices in Ireland starting at under €30,000. top trim just around
under €30,000. top trim just around €35,000.
They're doing a special offer at the moment at the when you register for a 261. There's €2,000 off it. Lovely job
261. There's €2,000 off it. Lovely job
on the front. So, this is based on the same platform as the MG4 that we have at home. So, I'm aware of how well that
home. So, I'm aware of how well that drives, but they've done a nice job of even modernizing this nice little staggered daytime running light. High
low beam module. You've got some actual arrow down along the side here. It's
raining here, so I'm going to try and fight the [snorts] large MG badge, 360D camera. This is the top trim, bigger
camera. This is the top trim, bigger battery.
Six different colors. I've had the silver on the channel when I had a first look at it. And I've also had the blue on the channel as well. Blue is probably my favorite color of it. What is yours?
Red is also nice. Now, in fairness, this is going to be the replacement for the ZS. Very popular, affordable car as
ZS. Very popular, affordable car as well. side down along the side. It is
well. side down along the side. It is
2.73 mters of a wheel basease and that's what all matters in a electric vehicle.
Comes in 17s and 18s uh wheels. These
are the 18s Bridgestone Teranzas.
Nice big chunky but a good aero efficiency on them as well. You've got
that cladding around in matte black retractable indicators. 360 camera with
retractable indicators. 360 camera with a chrome line that goes all the way along the top of the windows and then a brushed aluminum,
no sunroof, keyless entry, nice big chunky door handles, and then a matte black scuff plate down along the bottom with some silver plastic in
there.
My favorite angle is probably the nose.
And at the back then you have nice spoiler, probably an undersized window wiper, which would be one of my niggly bits I talked about. Nice coast to coast bar and again that daytime running like
checkered flag with a nice design element going on here. MGS5 with the EV in an anodized green top trim. In Ireland we call it
top trim. In Ireland we call it exclusive. In the UK you call it trophy
exclusive. In the UK you call it trophy is 553 L with a 60/40 split. Another bit
of stuff in there. And that's this floor up to its highest level. It does
drop down and you have your tools in underneath there. The side pockets.
underneath there. The side pockets.
Nice to have that power tail lift. It
has come in handy over the weekend.
That rear quarter is a nice little design element of it as well. It's going
up against the likes of the Gili EX5 that I have up on the channel, the um B10 from Elite Motors, and then the more
premium Kia EV3 Lrock.
MG holds its own at that price point with the level of tech that you've got inside it.
Tinted windows in the rear as well.
Charging rear right hand side. to the
supercharging corner. 10 to 80% in just under 30 minutes depending on even the battery the size in it. And you can see the four quadrants lighting up there.
This tells me I have over 50% or in between 50% battery.
[snorts] Let's go inside. Spacewise,
because it's on that dedicated electric vehicle platform, it's got a 100% flat floor. Nice upholstered on this top trim
floor. Nice upholstered on this top trim with some MG logos. You can see the M and the G
logos. You can see the M and the G there. Nice bright interior. Even though
there. Nice bright interior. Even though
it's gray, it's a bright gray isoix [clears throat] in behind this flap that you fold down.
So, when it's not in use, they're not in the way.
Three headrests.
Nice bit of gloss black in the armrest with some adaptable cup holders.
Feet. That's my seat set for me. I'm
6'2, 188 cm. Knees good as well. You are
up a bit higher. It's a staggered seating position. And then I'm headrest
seating position. And then I'm headrest before I'm I'm about 2 3 cm. Nice little
quarter light back here. And again on your inside. I need to put that button
your inside. I need to put that button off in the front.
Yeah. In the rear, only one bit of glass black going on here, but yeah, the central armrest doesn't come back very far at all. You have venting [snorts]
and you have that single point. You can
get adapters to make that a double lights uh um coat hook also coat hook and the B-pillar as well.
Not [snorts] bad support actually.
It's not bad. It does come up a bit.
It's a C segment SUV [snorts] in the front.
We jump over there.
We need to remember to do the window before.
And you can see where that window is locked here. And so then we can put it
locked here. And so then we can put it down. This is how far down it goes.
down. This is how far down it goes.
Nearly all the way. Not bad.
In the front on the door, you can see some carbon effect center locking. Good
quality door handles as well. Good
quality door bins. This is a bit economical plastic down towards the bottom. But this is soft touch. This is
bottom. But this is soft touch. This is
soft touch. That's soft touch. That's
soft touch as well.
Nice big driver display. We'll talk
about the efficiency once we get to the end of the journey today.
One niggly bit. Sorry, the second niggly bit is we have a visor, but there's no light here.
So, usually it's either up here on the thing, but no V. That's this is the top trim. Third niggly bit for me is there's
trim. Third niggly bit for me is there's no height adjusting on the seat belt.
Now, there are it has the ability obviously of pivoting. It does rotate, but if you are looking for something for a bit more height, just be aware of that as well.
Okay, over my right knee is my adjuster for my mirrors and the headlight leveler. The ability to open the front
leveler. The ability to open the front bonnet, that carbon fiber carries around. This is nice.
around. This is nice.
On, off, up, down. Nothing mechanical
about that. Does the job. Three main
elements battery range GSR2 three-spoke steering wheel, physical buttons. I wouldn't be a fan of the
buttons. I wouldn't be a fan of the glass back, but cruise [snorts] control on the left, voice control, audio, some shortcuts either side as well. And you
can configure those shortcuts as to what you want them to be. 12.8 in
and screen.
Then, and for the European market, they've put this extra row. So, volume,
home, where you want the air, your front, rear demyister, and hazard lights, fan speed, and then temperature, and then they want it on and off. Dual
vents here. Last vent over by the passenger side. No isoix in the front
passenger side. No isoix in the front passenger, so it is limited to two in the rear. Nice seats, chi wireless
the rear. Nice seats, chi wireless charging pad in the center console.
Nice, big, simple. And you can see the reversing camera here. And because it's the top trim, you have the 360° so you can have a look around. And they've
merged it all together there. Neutral,
park, drive. Park is pressed down.
Electronic handbrake, automatic handbrake, one pedal drive.
And yeah, steering wheel is reach and rake as well. Up, down, in, and out.
Left hand side is lights and indicators.
Right hand side is wipers. And it does have that little wiper at the rear. Can
you see it going there?
That headrest doesn't help things. But
at the angle I have up in Yeah, I just find it a small bit small.
[snorts] Uh if you're looking for a complete dash run through, I cover that in a separate video. If you're wondering how big that boot is, it's 453 L. I have
a will it fit video. So, I talk about child seats in the rear, push buggies in the rear. I think I put a um folding
the rear. I think I put a um folding bike and some suitcases in that video as well. So, if you're looking for space,
well. So, if you're looking for space, that's a separate video. I'll link it in here, but it's also up in the channel.
And if you're looking for more details on the dash, and it's wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Uh let me turn that around there. So, it's nicely laid out. The next level on from RMG4. So,
out. The next level on from RMG4. So,
you've got your weather, your app connection, your phone mirroring, your climate shortcut, radio, navigation.
There nice big tiles. You've got some streaming services as well. Heated
seats, heated steering wheel, and then in the car settings. What I do like is you do have, if you swipe down from the top, you've got this MG pilot, and you can configure what ADAS systems are
turned on or turned off. So, they've
done a really good job here of shortcuts. Um, your everything is
shortcuts. Um, your everything is customizable as to what you want in it.
And then that wireless phone mirroring if you do want it as well. Wired and
wireless with the chi wireless charging pad here. And then down underneath
pad here. And then down underneath you've got more storage as well as more storage in underneath there. Good big
deep.
So yeah, they've done a great job for the money, the value of the MGS5.
It is hard to knock it. Yes, the neglyy bits like there's no light in the visor and this isn't adjustable and the and you know bits and pieces left a small window wiper. You'd get over that for
window wiper. You'd get over that for the money.
Um, anything else on my notes before prices in Ireland? Uh, it's coming in at a 49 kWh battery coming in with the entry level trim at 2995. So, under
£30,000 I think it's something similar in the UK, maybe 28 27,000. And then the top trim, sorry, that entry level trim comes in a standard battery and a long
range battery. And the long range
range battery. And the long range battery is 64 kilowatt hour, 61 odd usable um WLTP. They're saying 480 km,
33 12, and then 35 just under 36 for the upper level trim, which this one is with a bigger battery.
MG Pilot Custom we've talked about. The
batteries themselves are only about the height of a can of Coke. They're 110 mm, so you can really feel how they've condensed that battery pack and you're not eating up into the footwell and the
height of the uh the floor in the car.
Going to talk about some of the driving now, but we've got four levels of regen with one pedal, four driving modes. We
have heard that there may be an extended range and potentially an X power, but that's all to be confirmed.
Yeah, let's have a drive. Let's teleport
ourselves back to Bel Mullet on the west coast of Ireland to see then what it's like by the time we get to the east coast. So, yeah, let's do that. So,
coast. So, yeah, let's do that. So,
we're about to leave Bel Mullet and WLTP on the MGS5 with the um entry- level trim big battery. We call it excite in
sorry excite in Ireland and then in the UK you call them SE is 480 km 465 for the upper level trim just cuz it's
got bit more weight cuz it's got more uh features inside it like electric motor for the boot release yada yada.
Um there are a couple of ways that the MG will tell you what your estimated range is on the driver display. So here
you can see that we have at 99% we've got 382. Now that is on my driving from
got 382. Now that is on my driving from the last coming down from Dublin over 300 km and 17.8.
If I want to give this car total reset on the right hand side I press this and you can see it says it at the bottom there. Long press that and it'll clear
there. Long press that and it'll clear the accumulated total. And then that brings me up to 435 with 99% battery.
Let's zoom out before we turn ourselves around. Uh 435 real world rain. It is
around. Uh 435 real world rain. It is
385. Um but I just want to It's a slightly worer day coming down here. Now
you can see it is raining. It is 11°. It
is windy. It's miserable. is what it is.
And so what we we'll do is head for Dublin. 320 kilometers roughly.
Uh I'm dropping it back to Sandyford, but it'll give you a good coaster to coast idea. So coming down, I landed
coast idea. So coming down, I landed with about 40 km left. So 360 with motorway, a bit of everything.
So that is the MGS5. We'll take it all the way up. We'll talk about the driving on the route as well. And yeah, let's see how we get on with the range test of
the MGS5. The entry level has a 47.1
the MGS5. The entry level has a 47.1 usable battery with a 120 kW electric motor giving you 168 horsepower. They're
both rear wheel drive and that has a WLTP of 340, probably real world 275.
And the one we're in today is the longrange battery with the 170 kW electric motor, 228 horsepower, giving
you 465 on this upper level trim. Real
world, probably 385 with 11°. But we'll talk about the
with 11°. But we'll talk about the efficiency once we get to Sandford.
No start stop button. You sit in, you realize you're in the car, press the brake pedal into drive, and away we go.
Interesting to see a lot of manufacturers going with rear wheel drive.
I wonder what the rationale behind it is. I know it's a better driving car,
is. I know it's a better driving car, but manufacturers don't always do what's best for the driver. It's looking at economies of scale. This has multilink
rear suspension as well. Again, some
other competitors have torsion beam.
Very practical car.
and we're away.
Gets the power down nicely and it has enough power visibility that rear that headrest if it could just be a bit better set up with
regards to um the height of it. You
know, sometimes you get them built in where you they're kind of fit into the middle middle bit of the seat cuz it does take up a bit of the visibility and then you've got that smaller wiper
behind it.
And we're in normal mode. No problem
here. Going onto the motorway. That's
90.
Speed limit here is 120 mph. 120 km an hour. 110
hour. 110 120 bit of road noise around those wear mirrors. They're wide which is great.
mirrors. They're wide which is great.
I've got blind spot built in. Seats are
comfortable. It has electronically adjusted height in and out. And it has me um mechanical lumbar support. So just
a big lever that either you have it off, you can obviously leave it which way you want it, but it's not um pneumatic airbags.
Automatic lights. Automatic lights.
automatic wipers.
I like this flat top, flat bottom steering wheel, uh, and the thumb rests with that perforated leather effect.
It's not leather, but for the money, for the money, great size infotainment and yes,
the fact that you've got that MG custom pilot where you can knock off the ADAS stuff, very good. Cuz it is intrusive. I know
very good. Cuz it is intrusive. I know
they've toned it down for Europe, but between lane keeping, speed sign, speed changing, it can be a lot.
But MG have done a good job with this.
And we've got an S6 coming soon as well.
So that's going to be uh obviously the next size up.
You'll be able to see the MGS S5 at the NEO electric vehicle show in partnership with Bank of Ireland and powered by SSE Electricity. Uh in two weeks time from
Electricity. Uh in two weeks time from when this video goes out, the 7th, which is a Friday, is the business day and on the Saturday it is the consumer day. the
8th. Tickets are free and you can register today on neo.ie.
Brakes because you've got your different regen levels and you can do that via the shortcuts on the steering wheel or you can go in through the infotainment. I'd
like some paddles.
It does have one pedal driving. I didn't
get that right on the first look video and I was told about it in the comments.
Lovely cruise control is nice as well. So you
just press cruise, engage it, and then the silver button on the left hand side at the speed that you want it set for and then the distance that you want it set for. So the speed is controlled by
set for. So the speed is controlled by up and down the toggle and then left and right is the distance to the vehicle in front and then forget about it.
Very nice miserable day today. has [snorts] been raining all the way up from Bel Mullet, but it's going to do coast to coast no
problem with that WLTP of 480, but at real world in around that 385, I'm going to have a buffer of around 50
left by the time I get up. Uh, and so, yeah, very good. has the MG pilot assistance
very good. has the MG pilot assistance within it as well. So, lots of different options there as well.
Let's go and see what it's like once we get all the way up the Dublin with regards to efficiency. We've arrived in Sanford, 311 km from Belm. Slightly
shorter, six or seven km shorter than my normal journey. And we have some
normal journey. And we have some efficiency figures. And we can zoom in
efficiency figures. And we can zoom in here on the accumulated total. And you
can see we've spent nearly 5 hours driving. 311 km.2
driving. 311 km.2
66 km an hour. And then 16.4 kwatt hours per 100 km. So very efficient in fairness for a car of this size in a poor weather conditions as well.
Didn't have the heated seats on. Didn't
feel the need. But air conditioner is going there at what degree are we at?
Uh 21° and it's been on the whole time on the way up. Speed limit is in an average of 65 km an hour, but I was at max speed limit. So if it was 100, I was
at 100. Motorway 120 round the M50 and
at 100. Motorway 120 round the M50 and so on and so forth. So good efficiency, a good car overall. definitely would be on my short list for this size of
electric vehicle and you should probably have a look at it. If you're interested in going for that kind of shape and size of an EV, the MGS5 potentially might be for you. Hopefully, you've enjoyed that
for you. Hopefully, you've enjoyed that second look, proper drive of the S5. As
I mentioned already, I have a first look video up on it, but more importantly, I have a complete dash run through and a video on what it can fit inside it and car seats, etc. Uh, and so make sure
you're looking at those in the description and they'll also be linked up on the screen. If you haven't already subscribed to the channel, please do so.
Hit the like button, leave a comment, and remember, if you think an EV is for you, leave it to me and I'll review.
Thank you very much for watching.
